Excellence in Football Writing and Broadcasting to be Recognized: ‘Over Time’ Literary Achievement Award

The ability to observe a sporting event and turn it into vivid word pictures is truly an art. The problem today is that—what with the thousands of sports-related Internet sites and numerous Cable TV channels devoted to sports--there is more ‘stuff’ out there than even the most dedicated NFL fan can possibly keep up with. Some of it is gem-quality journalism, a lot of it is noisy, unpleasant junk.

So, how is the good football writing separated from the bad? How can the words artists be distinguished from the finger painters?

How to Sell One Billion Dollars Worth of Anything

After successfully selling 75,000 different products on live television and generating over one billion dollars in personal product sales, America's first ever home shopping host Bob Circosta clearly knows how to sell. But ironically, Circosta insists that "selling" is something he hates to do.

"In today's culture, 'selling' implies that you're doing something to someone," Circosta explained. "I have a problem with that, because to me, a good salesman isn't doing something to someone - he's doing something for someone. When a consumer values your product or service more than he values other similarly-priced options, you've transformed 'selling' from an adversarial confrontation into a mutually-advantageous agreement. In this sense, 'selling' can better be defined as free people trading freely. And what most people fail to realize is that the act of selling an idea to a family member is exactly the same as selling a product to a customer! Unfortunately, 'selling' is a skill that most people haven't developed - but it's a skill that anyone can master."

When the buyer of a California business for sale was looking for a business to buy, the last thing he thought of was a home-based business. He had searched for a year but couldn't find anything just right. Now he's the new owner of a small business that sells blinds - and he loves it.

The business was run by one man, came with six territories, and had good cash flow. The listing agent, Christina Krikorian thought it would be a tough sale. "Many buyers don't trust home-based businesses. They don't feel legitimate because they can't see the business," she explained. The business sold in a week for $225,000. Since the seller was organized, and it was a cash deal, the sale went fast.

The group members, part of eBays online community section, maintain a private discussion board where they discuss everything from auction strategies to chemotherapy. Members check in throughout the day to laugh, encourage one another, vent a little, or to share each other's company throughout the long days of creating eBay listings and managing their online businesses.

"It's time for us to give back to the community which has so generously given to all of us. Gilda's Club is based on community-women helping others who are struggling with cancer- and I can't think of a greater foundation to support in our first charity auction," says group founder Amato. "Gildas Club was selected because all of our members have been affected by cancer in one way or another, including a few members that are cancer survivors."
