Elegance and Tranquility from the Shogun Era Distinguish Conrad Tokyo, by Boye Lafayette De Mente
The opening of Conrad Tokyo in the summer of 2005, the eighth Asia-Pacific hotel of the Conrad Hotels group, marked a milestone in the evolution of hotels in Japan.
The interior of Conrad Tokyo was designed and decorated to reflect the elegance and tranquility that was the hallmark of over 400 luxury-class Honkan (Hoan-kahn) inns that were in operation from the late 1630s to 1868 during Japan's Tokugawa Shogunate Edo era—a span of over 200 years.
The style and quality of service provided for Conrad Tokyo guests is also patterned after the standards set by the Honkan inns of the Edo period—when Edo was the largest city on earth and the lifestyle of affluent Japanese achieved new heights of sophistication.
This “back to the future” ambiance of Conrad Tokyo was overseen from its earliest planning stage by General Manager Jan Monkedieck, a veteran German-born hotelier whose previous Hilton hotel experience in Asia included assignments in China, Dubai, India, Korea, Myanmar, and two years at Hilton Tokyo Bay.
Says Monkedieck: “Conrad Tokyo’s philosophy is based on modern Japanese luxury that combines spacious rooms, superior service and spectacular views with the synergy arising from the tranquil and relaxing elements of traditional Japanese arts and crafts.”
The elegance of shogunate Japan’s elite Honkan is reflected in every area and feature of Conrad Tokyo, from its rooms and suites, its restaurants, banquet facilities, meeting rooms, 1,400-square-meter spa, and indoor swimming pool, to its wedding chapel.
These amenities, plus what General Manager Monkedieck calls Conrad Tokyo’s “silent symphony of service,” made the hotel an instant success from day one.
But there is more to it than just amenities and service, Monkedieck said. “For the experienced international travel the expectation of outstanding quality in both amenities and service is a given.
“These travelers also want the ambiance that reflects the cultural of the country and provides them with a feeling of symbiosis with that culture; of being able to absorb and enjoy it to the fullest. And that is what we strive to do,” he added.
International hotels in Tokyo have made use of traditional Japanese art and design concepts for decades, but Conrad Tokyo is the first one to have been conceived from the beginning to take advantage of the remarkable aesthetic and sensory appeal of classic Japanese concepts.
In another break with traditional hotels, Conrad Tokyo occupies the top floors of the Tokyo Shiodome Building, a 37-story multi-purpose tower that offers panoramic views of Hamarikyu Gardens (formerly the beach residence of Emperor Meiji), Rainbow Bridge (that connects to Odaiba Island) and Tokyo Bay.
The Shiodome area, which adjoins Tokyo’s famous Ginza entertainment and shopping district on the south, is a spectacular development of high-rise towers that are connected by a huge underground restaurant and shopping plaza that extends to the Shimbashi commuter train and subway station some six to eight minutes away.
